Norbu The Montanna – Reimagining Wellness in the Himalayas
Situated above the Kangra Valley in Dharamshala, Norbu The Montanna offers a refreshing blend of luxury, wellness, and Tibetan culture. Experience mountain-view villas, tea gardens, spa therapies, yoga, immersive local experiences as you stay in this villa that feels restorative and luxurious.
There’s a Tibetan word, norbu, that means “jewel”. Not the kind you wear but the kind you find unexpectedly, in a place you weren’t fully prepared for, and a trip can actually be difficult to recreate anywhere else in the hills.
Norbu The Montanna sits in Banordu village, above Dharamshala, in Himachal Pradesh. It’s part of IHCL’s SeleQtions portfolio, and perched above the Kangra Valley with the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. It spreads across seven acres of landscape that shifts personality by the hour.
It is among the most notable luxury hotel openings in North India in recent years. Let’s find out more before you finalise your booking.
More About the Property
The grounds at Norbu are genuinely alive with an in-house tea garden, forest trails, pine-covered hillside, and an outdoor pool with breathtaking views.
The design is Tibetan-influenced, it’s woven into the property’s identity. Leopard, Sparrow, Yak, Yag God, the Tibetan flag are the inspirations behind each of the 31 rooms and suites.
The Dhauladhar range is visible from almost everywhere, thanks to the brilliant design. Every balcony, every communal terrace, every window placement is in conversation with the dreamy mountains.

Dining Stories
Namak is Norbu’s all-day restaurant, serving Indian, Tibetan, and international cuisines with breakfast options ranging from continental to buffet to à la carte.
The name Namak means “salt” in Hindi, and suggests something fundamental, which is broadly accurate when it comes to defining the restaurant’s culture.
The Chef’s Table is the more intimate dining experience, focused on Mediterranean cuisine in a setting that makes the meal feel more occasion-worthy.
The Pool Bar handles the in-between moments, small bites, drinks, and views that you’ll find yourself sitting with for longer than intended.
Wellness Experiences
The Norbu Spa is a proper spa, with each session designed around restoring rather than performing wellness. The outdoor swimming pool is expansive and faces the mountains.
The yoga studio and daily yoga classes work best in the early morning, when the light is doing what it does at altitude and the temperature is still cool. The fitness centre rounds out the facilities for guests who want to keep up with their routine.
Spiritual sessions, meditation, and mindfulness experiences are also available and aligned with the property’s position in the Kangra Valley, a region with deep Buddhist and Tibetan cultural roots.
Experiences Beyond the Property
Norbu isn’t positioned as a place you leave and return merely to sleep. But the surrounding landscape makes it a natural base for some of the most compelling experiences in Himachal Pradesh.
Fruit picking in the hotel’s own gardens.
Tea-tasting from the in-house tea estate.
Trekking toward Triund (one of the more accessible and rewarding high-altitude treks in the Dhauladhar range)
Adventure sports in the valley.
Day trips to McLeodganj and the Dalai Lama Temple Complex, roughly a 17-minute drive.
The tour desk at Norbu can arrange all of this. The concierge operates 24 hours, and the property’s local knowledge is genuine, this is a hotel staffed by people who live in this landscape, not rotated in from other properties.
Getting There: Everything You Need to Know
By Air: The nearest airport is Kangra Airport (DHM/Gaggal), approximately 14 km from the property. A 24-hour airport shuttle is available from Norbu at an additional charge to book in advance. The drive from Kangra Airport takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. Kangra Airport is served by regular domestic flights from Delhi and select Indian cities.
By Train: The nearest major railway station is Pathankot Junction, approximately 85 km from Dharamshala. From Pathankot, the drive to Norbu takes around two to two and a half hours. A taxi from Pathankot station is the most practical option (hotel transfers can be arranged). For travellers coming from Delhi, the Himachal Express and Jammu Mail both stop at Pathankot.
There is also a narrow-gauge heritage railway, the Kangra Valley Railway that runs from Pathankot through the valley and stops at Kangra. It’s an experience in itself, though slower. The Norbu team can advise on connections from there.
By Road: From Delhi, the drive to Norbu is approximately 475–490 km, typically taking 8–10 hours depending on route and traffic conditions. The most common route runs via Chandigarh, Kiratpur Sahib, and Mandi before climbing toward Dharamshala. The roads are well-maintained until the last Himalayan section, which involves switchbacks and narrow mountain roads.
From Chandigarh, the drive is roughly 240 km and takes around 4–5 hours. From Amritsar, approximately 200 km and 3.5–4 hours. Valet parking is complimentary for self-drive guests.
A Final Word
Norbu The Montanna is the kind of hotel that doesn’t need to work hard to make an impression. The mountains do that. What the property does, and does with real care is make sure that everything around you is worthy of the view: the rooms, the food, the spa, the staff, the experiences.
