Venice Film Festival 2025- A Saga Of Celluloid Brilliance

With 82 years of showcasing cinematic excellence, the Venice International Film Festival was held from 27th August to 6th September 2025, at Venice Lido in Italy.

Venice Film Festival Red Carpet!

Unlike other years, 2025’s Red Carpet felt somewhat ‘restrained’, and was low on the kind of glamour we have witnessed in the past-like Lady Gaga’s Maleficent Vibe with the Dior creation of a horned lace headpiece!

But the Festival did see some memorable moments-Julia Roberts making her debut at 57 in a Versace creation by Dario Vitale, the picture of elegance!
Then there was the absolute stunner- Mia Goth, who was promoting her film Frankenstein. Her classic look was enhanced by a striking Dior creation paired with a stunning diamond-and-emerald necklace from Tiffany & Co.

George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, were the fan favourites on the red carpet, with the latter wearing a stunning pink gown by designer Erik Mortensen.

Moving on to the Movies!

And the winners are- sound the trumpet…!

A special year for India, as for the first time an Indian woman was awarded the prestigious Orizzonti Award for Best Director for her directorial debut Songs of Forgotten Trees in the category of ‘international competition that spotlights bold voices and fresh storytelling.’

American director Jim Jarmusch was the recipient of the festival’s top prize for his movie ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’, which had a big star cast consisting of Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver. This movie is a comedy-drama anthology film with an ensemble cast.

The Silver Lion, Grand Jury Prize was won by ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’, which is directed by French-Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania and got a standing ovation for 23 minutes, which was one of the longest ovations in the history of the festival. Touching on the topic of the ongoing tragedies in Gaza, this movie captures the horrors of the war.

Monochrome At the Venice Film Festival

Monochrome or black and white films continue to make an impactful statement in the 21C. One such film screened at the Festival was the adaptation of Albert Camus’s 1942 novella “The Stranger” by French director Francois Ozon, set in 1930s Algeria.

Italian documentary ‘Sotto le Nuvole” (Below the Clouds)’ by Gianfranco Rosi had vivid imagery of the Italian landscape. The last high-profile black and white screening was that of “In the Hand of Dante” by Julian Schnabel, which received mixed reviews.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Two lifetime achievement awards were given this year, the first one being awarded on the opening night to German director Werner Herzog, 83, who has directed over 70 movies in his lifespan, along with his latest documentary “Ghost Elephants”.

The second recipient was 92-year-old actor Kim Novak, who gained popularity with Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘Vertigo’. Her life is documented in the docu-drama “Kim Novak’s Vertigo”, which was also shown. In it, she reveals her decision to leave Hollywood amidst her rising fame and retire to a life as a painter.
